From Simple To Complex Sentences

このスピーキング練習の目的の一つはいくつかの「Simple Sentence」を1つの「Complex Sentence」にまとめる能力を上げる。下に色んな例文があります。

Sentence Set#1:

His girlfriend didn't love him anymore. He was terribly sad.

= The fact that his girlfriend didn't love him anymore made him terribly sad.

= He was terribly sad that his girlfriend didn't love him anymore.

Sentence Set #2:

He looked carefully left and right. He crossed the street.

= Carefully looking left and right, he crossed the street.

= After looking carefully left and right, he crossed the street.

Sentence Set #3:

She curled up on the sofa. She read her book. She munched happily on snack chips.

= She curled up on the sofa and read her book, as she munched happily on snack chips

= She curled up on the sofa and read her book, munching happily on snack chips.

Sentence Set # 4:

The students did the story homework. They wanted to improve their speaking skills. They worked hard for several hours.

= The students, wanting to improve their speaking skills, did the storytelling homework, working hard for several hours.

Sentence Set #5:

The car drove over the road / The car drove carefully / The road was bumpy / The car was carrying some furniture in the trunk.

= The car, carrying some furniture in the trunk, drove carefully over the bumpy road.

Sentence Set #6:

Cookies are a delicious snack. / They taste even better with milk. / Milk is a cool drink. / It is a refreshing drink.

= Cookies, a delicious snack, taste even better with milk, a cool and refreshing drink.
